Interview Process

Whether you are participating in a phone interview with your recruiter or an in-person interview with the hiring manager, one thing will be consistent, the selection process that is used at Progressive. This process helps verify that this is the right job for you and to help the hiring manager make the best decision for the position posted.

Progressive uses Targeted Selection in its interviewing process. To help you better understand what that means and what will be expected of you during the interview(s), we have provided some additional information that further explains what Targeted Selection is and what the questions look like.

What is Targeted Selection?

The focus is to offer candidates questions than can be answered with specific, real life job examples with the premise that past behavior can predict future behavior and helps to verify that this job is the right fit for you. Targeted Selection helps Progressive:

  • Collect job-related behavior from a candidate's past history.
  • Gather complete examples of past behaviors that are directly related to critical job requirements.
  • Focus on specific competencies targeted for a position that indicate whether a candidate can do the job.
  • Explore candidate's likes and dislikes for determining his/her motivations to do the job.
  • Better sell the job, organization or location to the candidate.

What do Targeted Selection questions look like?

Targeted Selection uses behavioral, nontheoretical questions which prompt answers that describe specifically what the candidate did, has done or has said. The examples below illustrate Target Selection questions:

  • What was your most difficult sale, and how did you approach it?
  • What changes in your job have you recommended? Why?
  • Describe a situation in which you were able to convince someone to see things your way.
  • Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation. How did you react?
  • Tell me about a time when you made a bad decision and what did you do?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to go above and beyond your job responsibilities in order to get a job done?
  • Tell me about a time when you had too many things to do and you had to prioritize your tasks.

It's about you. And it's about time. ®
